A Wolf in Pike County

MILFORD, PA – WQXR announcer Bob Sherman, flutist Allison Kiger, and Ensemble Tremblay will perform Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and other pieces at the Milford Theatre on October 29th at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $20 for adults; children under 12 – for whom Prokofiev wrote Peter and the Wolf in the first place -- are admitted free.

Peter and the Wolf is a narrated piece (that's where Bob Sherman comes in) written in 1936 to introduce children to classical music, but it is as popular with adults as it is with kids. It tells the story of a boy who, defying his grandfather, captures a dangerous wolf and then must decide what to do with him. Prokofiev's story with music was not a great success when it was first performed, but then, neither was The Wizard of Oz.

The October 29th concert also includes music by Ligeti, Nielsen, and Dvorak, whose 170th birthday is being celebrated this year. Dvorak was not just a great Czech composer: With his New World Symphony and other works written on American shores, he helped invent American classical music.

For more than two decades Bob Sherman presided over "The Listening Room" at WQXR, and on public radio station WFUV he serves as the host of "Woody's Children." Sherman is also the co-author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Classical Music.
Allison Kiger, winner of numerous competitions, holds degrees from the Royal Academy of Music in London, McGill University in Montreal and Indiana University. She has performed in the United States, Canada, and Europe, appearing with the Jupiter Symphony, the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey, L'Orchestre de la Francophonie Canadienne, and Dave Brubeck. Ensemble Tremblay, directed by Kiger, is a chamber group comprised of woodwind and horn players who often perform as soloists.

The Milford Theatre, at 114 East Catherine Street, opened as a film and live theater venue in 1911. Pike County is currently observing the theatre's 100th anniversary.
This 3 p.m. concert is a production of Kindred Spirits Arts Programs, a nonprofit organization that offers concerts and music education programs in northeastern Pennsylvania. Tickets ($20 for adults, no charge for children under 12) are available on the Kindred Spirits Arts Programs website.
